PORTLAND MEN'S RESOURCE CENTER
HISTORY
Portland's Men's
Resource Center was established in 1972 as an organization of men in alliance
with the feminist movement with an interest in exploring gender issues,
particularly re-evaluating traditional gender roles, stereotypes
and sexism. We held educational forums and consciousness raising
groups, published a newsletter and participated in political activism.
Counseling sessions were first offered in 1977 including individual,
couples and family and group therapy. In the early 80's, we began
to offer violence intervention groups for men and counseling sessions
for gay men.
The Women's
Counseling Center was
established in 1986, as a resource for the female partners of men
in the violence intervention program. The focus was as support and
counseling groups for women to work on healing and empowerment. We
soon after began to offer counseling for women for a wider range
of issues.
We became a state certified mental
health center in 1992 and continue to offer mental health counseling
sessions with a sensitivity to gender issues. In 2001, we started a
group counseling program to address substance abuse and violence
issues simultaneously. Portland's Men's Resource Center and Women's
Counseling Center offer a rare blend of gender specific, yet coordinated
and integrated services.
